Americans visiting Australia

Are you planning a trip to Australia and wondering what the folks Down Under are really like? Become a member of FRIENDS OVERSEAS - AUSTRALIA and find out!

Our meet-the-people program brings American visitors together with residents comfortably and informally, matching members with similar interests. Participants indicate the dates they will be available and their preference for meeting individuals, couples or families.

Once you join FOA, you will receive names and addresses (and e-mail addresses where available) of several of our Australian members. You should then write briefly to each one, introducing yourself as an FOA member and giving the date(s) you will be available. Letters should be mailed early enough to ensure a reply before your departure — allow about ten days each way by air mail. Of course e-mail (if the particular host has it) is considerably quicker!

Whether you are with a tour group with only limited time to spare, or planning an extended visit, a few hours with an FOA member will enhance your stay. You will. learn about the local lifestyle and very likely get valuable tips on the best and most economical places to eat, stay, shop and visit.

Each contact provides a different individual experience. FOA gives members the opportunity to meet; the rest is up to you.

FRIENDS OVERSEAS started in 1972 with a Scandinavian program — and a unique new approach to international travel. Tourists so seldom get to know local people in the context of day-to-day living; often the only “locals” they are likely to encounter are hotel concierges, sightseeing guides, waiters and salespeople — and other tourists. The success of our Scandinavian program proved how eager Americans were - and still are for - something less impersonal, more fulfilling than these brief contacts.

So if you enjoy making new friends and learning how they live, why not join FOA?

To get an application form, please send a business-size (4 x 9 1/2 inch), stamped self-addressed envelope to:

Friends Overseas Australia is run by Ann Whyte. Ann was born in Britain, settled in New York, married an Australian and travelled worldwide during her career in the airline industry, so she knows the value of meeting local people in faraway places. That's what led her to join Larry Eisner in running Friends Overseas, specialising in Australia, where she has family links.
